With Bodo accord, peace gets a chance

New Delhi/ Guwahati, Feb 10: Fresh from its talks with the NSCN (I-M) to try and return peace to the Naga hills at an early date, the Centre has clinched another accord in the North East: this time with the Bodo Liberation Tigers (BLT), hoping to end strife in Assam’s Bodo-inhabited areas.

In a tripartite agreement signed today, the Centre, Assam and the BLT decided on the creation of an autonomous, self-governing Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) which would replace the existing Bodoland Autonomous Council.


As many as 3,082 villages have been identified for inclusion in the proposed BTC...

Encroachment threatening wildlife in Behali reserve forest

BISWANATH CHARIALI, Feb 10? The future of the wild animals in Behali Reserve Forest hangs in balance due to massive encroachment of forest land by Arunachali people. Although eviction drives were carried out by the Forest Department in the recent past, the number of encroachers has increased three-fold.

234 candidates in Nagaland poll fray

DIMAPUR, Feb 10 ? The pre-election process in Nagaland has reached its last stages with the last date for filing of nomination expiring Friday. The scrutiny, which was done on Saturday, revealed a total of 234 candidates who have filed their nominations for the 10th Nagaland Legislative Assembly Polls scheduled for February 26 next. None of the nominations were either rejected or disqualified.

Leaders wiser from mistakes

Feb. 10: Upbeat Bodo leaders today promised not to commit the ?same mistakes? which led to the failure of the 1993 accord but sought the co-operation of their ?Assamese brethren? for the success of the Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC).

?Let me assure you, there will be no repetition of what happened with the 1993 Accord, which was done in a hurried manner,? BLT leader Mainao Daimary said after signing of the pact in New Delhi today between the outfit, the Centre and the Assam government.
