Naga surfers caught in a web

Dimapur, Jan. 28: Nagaland?s net surfers are living through a virtual nightmare and that is putting the matter lightly.

Ask any surfer in the state and he is sure to tell the same tale: the modem keeps on making weird noises as the surfer waits, frets and fumes. Even if one is lucky to be connected to the web, the data flow is so slow that it?s enough to give headaches.

?Don?t even ask...the very thought of surfing triggers my migraine,? says Tainla, a housewife from Kohima.

Power crisis plunges Meghalaya in darkness

Shillong, Jan. 28: Meghalaya is reeling under an acute power crisis which threatens to plunge the state into long periods of darkness.

Over the past couple of weeks, Shillong and the major towns of the state have been experiencing power failure at intervals of 20 to 30 minutes throughout the day.

MeSEB officials attributed the power crisis to the breakdown of the 60-MW stage IV power station at Umtru and the non-availability of adequate power from Central sector grids.

Minister quits Jamir Cabinet

Kohima/ Dimapur, Jan. 28: In yet another jolt to Nagaland chief minister S.C. Jamir, senior Congress MLA and former minister T.A. Ngullie today quit the party and joined the BJP, apparently after being denied a Congress ticket for the February 26 Assembly elections.

Ngullie?s resignation followed a similar move by T. Chuba, minister for higher and technical education and land revenue in the Jamir Cabinet, on January 16. Home minister Neiphiu Rio had quit the party last year.
