Shillong, Jan. 25: Hundreds of mobile phone subscribers in the city have threatened to expose an alleged attempt by the Reliance Telecom Limited?s Shillong chapter to ?dupe and exploit the consumer?. The proposed switch-over from the existing pre-paid (smart card users) mobile system to the post-paid system, as has been announced by the Reliance Telecom Limited?s Shillong office, has met with opposition.

Karbis snap pact with Kukis

Nagaon, Jan. 24: In a move that could widen the ethnic divide in violence-hit Karbi Anglong and North Cachar Hills districts of Assam, the Autonomous State Demand Committee (ASDC) today scrapped a crucial pact with the Kuki National Assembly (KNA).

One of the main clauses of the memorandum of understanding signed between the ASDC and the KNA on December 4, 2000 promises a hill council for the indigenous Kukis residing in Singhasan Hills in Karbi Anglong. The ASDC is spearheading a campaign for an autonomous Karbi state in the district.

Mahanta raises hand for top job

Guwahati, Jan. 23: A day after the bickering factions of the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) called a poll-necessitated truce, former chief minister Prafulla Kumar Mahanta formally put his hand up for the party top job to set at rest speculation about whether he had shelved his comeback plans.

Guwahati, Jan. 23: Retired Karnataka cadre Mizo IPS H.T. Sangliana has joined the BJP and is likely to contest the ensuing Lok Sabha polls from Karnataka.
