Army weighs NSCN request

Kohima, Feb. 25: The army will consider a proposal by the NSCN (I-M) seeking a location shift for their headquarters from Punglwa in Peren district to someplace in Nagaland?s Intangki forest. During a recent meeting of the ceasefire monitoring group, the NSCN (I-M) proposed the change of location.

?There have been proposals and we shall examine them. We do not have a problem if they have it at the present location or elsewhere as far as the ceasefire ground rules are adhered to,? Lt Gen. Daljeet Singh, general officer commanding of 3 Corps, told mediapersons here yesterday.

Outfit dubs talks offer a Delhi ploy

Imphal, Feb. 25: The Revolutionary People?s Front (RPF), a banned organisation of Manipur, has rejected the Centre?s offer to rebel groups in the Northeast to hold talks to bring lasting peace in the region. The RPF declared that the offer of peace parleys was nothing but a ploy to crush the region?s struggle.

The RPF, the political wing of the People?s Liberation Army, said in an editorial in the latest issue of its mouthpiece Monthly Collection that Delhi?s offer for talks was meaningless as it has imposed the precondition that there would be no compromise on India?s territorial integrity.

Tea unions in Cachar brace for showdown

Silchar, Feb. 25: The Cachar Chah Sramik Union (CCSU) is gearing up for a showdown with tea companies in south Assam. The Intuc-affiliated trade union is the largest organisation of tea labourers in the gardens of Cachar region. It has been demanding immediate payment of the daily-rated wage hike under the third tranche of enhanced wages for Cachar plantation workers that came into force on June 1 last year.

Neighbours attack new converts

Imphal, Feb 24: More than 40 people were arrested after they attacked new Christian converts in Imphal West today. A police team has been posted at the village to prevent a backlash. Of the arrested, 34 are women.

The police said villagers attacked the house of Apabi Golmei and her family, who converted to Christianity recently, at 10 am today. However, timely intervention by a police team prevented the mob from harming the family.

Assam snubs Rio offer on border

Guwahati/Nagaon, Feb. 24: Assam today turned down the Nagaland government?s offer to settle the inter-state border dispute between the two neighbouring states out of court.

Dispur admitted that the situation in the D-sector in Golaghat district was tense, but chief minister Tarun Gogoi said: ?There is no question of an out-of-court settlement when the land rightfully belongs to Assam. Let the Supreme Court decide.?
