AIZAWL, July 1 ? Mizoram Chief Minister and Mizo National Front chief Zoramthanga on Wednesday said that he was willing to continue his peace mission in the North East after Prime Minister Manmohan Singh asked him to continue broader peace deals with the region?s insurgent groups including the NSCN-IM.
Speaking at a Peace Day function here, Zoramthanga said he had gone to Bangkok four times to meet Naga rebel leaders like Th Muivah and Issac Chishi Swu in his efforts to bring the NSCN to the negotiating table with the Centre in Delhi. ?We were engaged in peace talks with the Centre for 15 years and had peace before our neighbours and we are prepared to help them in the area of negotiations and making peace,? he said.
To commemorate the signing of the historic peace accord between the Centre and the erstwhile underground Mizo National Front (MNF), ?Remna Ni? or Peace Day was observed in Mizoram on Wednesday. The Mizo Accord was signed by late Laldenga on behalf of the MNF, RD Pradhan, the then Union Home Secretary on behalf of the Centre, and Lalkhama, the then Chief Secretary of Mizoram on behalf of the State on this day in 1986.
Zoramthanga said that the hard-earned peace should be preserved at all costs. ?We are not only to enjoy peaceful atmosphere brought by the accord but also should spread the gospel of peace in the trouble-torn North-east region and across the whole country,? Zoramthanga, the former rebel leader, said.
