Shillong, Feb. 26: A Meghalaya customs official, released from militant custody recently, has provided police with valuable information on links between rebels of the Northeast and Bangladesh army personnel.
L.H. Faihrem, who was released by the banned Achik National Volunteers? Council (ANVC) and the National Socialist Council of Nagalim (Isak-Muivah) on February 19 after months in captivity, said during interrogation that the militants had kept him in a hideout in Bangladesh, senior police officials said.
A senior police official, in charge of investigating the case, said Faihrem had also revealed how Bangladesh army personnel assisted militants from the Northeast.
?We now have enough proof and as it has come from a senior customs official, we certainly have a case,? said the police official. He added, ?The customs official has said that he saw Bangladesh Rifles men near camps belonging to militants of the ANVC and the NCSN (I-M).?
ANVC and NSCN (I-M) militants abducted Faihrem from West Khasi Hills near the Indo-Bangla border on October 9. His release was reportedly secured after payment of Rs 10 lakh. Faihrem?s revelations have altered the intelligence and security agencies in the state and Delhi.
Sources said Faihrem might be asked to share his experiences with special intelligence officials appointed by the CBI and the Research and Intelligence Wing (RAW).
