NDFB may target ABSU, BLT leaders

GUWAHATI, April 11 — Intelligence agencies in the State have once again warned of the possibility of the banned National Democratic Front of Bodoland (NDFB) trying to attack leaders of the Bodo Liberation Tiger (BLT) and the All Bodo Students’ Union (ABSU) in order to destablise the peace process that has been initiated with the MoU on the BTC.

Intelligence sources confirmed that the NDFB is planning to eliminate some of the top BLT and ABSU leaders. Top on the list of possible targets are BLT vice president Kamal Mushary alias Chandan Brahma and its publicity secretary Mainao Daimary alias Kampa Bargayary. They are said to be the immediate targets.

Other BLT and ABSU leaders facing ‘grave threats to their lives’ from the NDFB are BLT chairman Hagrama Basumatary, the outfit’s military secretary Hitesh Basumatary and ABSU president Rabiram Narzary, the sources said. According to them, the NDFB is inimical to the BLT and the ABSU as it fears that the successful implementation of the recently concluded Bodo accord will further isolate the NDFB. As it is, the NDFB has been turned into a marginal force with little voice on issues concerning the Bodos.

It may be mentioned here that the Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) under the amended Sixth Schedule is likely to be constituted next month. The leaders of the BLT and the ABSU are currently in New Delhi meeting with officials of the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) to expedite the process.

The NDFB is opposed to any peace settlement fearing that it might become redundant in case peace is secured. The outfit has been inimical to the BLT and the ABSU for quite some time. Two years ago, it had ‘banned’ the two Bodo organsiations, along with three others, on the plea that they were conspiring to sabotage the NDFB’s ‘revolution’ for a sovereign Bodo homeland. According to the NDFB, the BLT is merely a puppet in the hands of the Centre, helping to split the Bodo people.
