KSU demands renaming of NEHU

SHILLONG, Nov 16 ? The Khasi Students Union today demanded renaming of the North Eastern Hill University and expressed opposition to the move of Development of North Eastern Region Ministry to include Sikkim in the university?s jurisdiction.

Citing cases of local students being ?deprived? of admission to the NEHU as there was a ?continued inflow? from other North Eastern states to the university, the prominent students? body called for renaming the NEHU as Shillong Central University.

?Meghalaya is the only state in the North-east without its own university. It is hightime the state gets its own central university and this can be done only if the name of the present university is changed,? KSU president Samuel Jyrwa said in a memorandum submitted to Development of North Eastren Region (DONER) Minister PR Kyndiah.

The memorandum, signed by KSU education cell chairman Michael War, strongly opposed the the DONER ministry?s move to amend the NEHU Act to include Sikkim in its jurisdiction. The union argued that besides aggravating local students? admission problems, the proposed move would increase the possibility of influx of outsiders especially from Nepal. The migration of Nepalese citizens would be ?facilitated? through the academic institutions of Sikkim, the memorandum stated.

The KSU also called for setting up an Indian Institute of Management (IIM) in Shillong as Meghalaya was lagging far behind in technical education unlike other states of the region. These states boasted of many institutions of higher and technical learning.
