GUWAHATI, May 11 – A joint meeting of 10 organisations, including nine minorities’ organisations, held here today under the auspices of the United Minorities’ Front (UMF), Assam, made an appeal to all the people in general and the minorities in particular, not to be provoked by the BJP and other forces’ bid to whip up communal tension in the name of repeal of IMDT Act.
The meeting presided over by UMF president HRA Choudhury also urged upon the people to maintain vigil against the designs of the communal forces and to keep intact the traditional peace and amity in the society at any cost. It also decided to convene a meeting of the secular and democratic forces and the editors of the newspapers published from the State within three weeks’ time in a bid to resolve the issues thrown by the move to repeal the IMDT Act.
The meeting in another resolution decided to send memorandums with signatures from common people, to the President of India on the issue by June-end. The organisations which took part in the meeting today also decided to meet national leaders of all the political parties on the issue before the Monsoon Session of Parliament and also to hold a national-level seminar at New Delhi for evolving a national consensus on the vexed IMDT Act issue.
The organisations attending the meeting included the CRPC, AAMSU (Nazir and Sabibur factions), Bengali Yuba-Chatra Federation, All Assam Minorities Unemployed Youths Association and the State unit of the Samata Party, among others. A coordination committee of these organisations was also formed in the meeting.
