Karbi outfit locks horns with UPDS

Nagaon, June 29: The Karbi Longri North Cachar Hills Liberation Front (KNLF) today said it was ready to call off its indefinite blockade in the two hill districts if voluntary organisations and political parties can dissuade the rival United People’s Democratic Solidarity (UPDS) from attacking its activists.

The KNLF, earlier known as a splinter group of the UPDS, clamped the blockade on June 21 in protest against the killing of four of its members in an encounter with security forces at Donkamokam in the last week of May.

KNLF general secretary H.S. Timung said it might call off the indefinite bandh on humanitarian grounds if social, political and students’ organisations of the two hill districts take the initiative in bringing an end to the “genocide of Karbis” by UPDS militants.

The Karbi militant group has threatened to launch an armed operation against the UPDS on April 18.

The pro-talks faction of the UPDS, however, today denied the involvement in the recent violence in the two hill districts.

UPDS joint secretary Wojaru Musrang today blamed a section of the political parties for the claims.

Musrang made it clear that the operation of the UPDS against KNLF militants would continue. “Nobody can stop our operation against the KNLF militants,” Musrang said.
