Jamat-e-Islami helping MULTA

GUWAHATI, July 4? Taking advantage of the porous Indo-Bangla border, Bangladesh based organisation Jamat-E-Islami is trying to extend help to organisations like Muslim United Liberation Front of Assam (MULTA), security sources said here. Sources said that the gameplan of the Jamat-E-Islami came to light after the arrest of one MULTA activist Sahadat Hussain in Dhubri district. Sahadat, who hails from Chandpur district of Bangladesh, was sent to Jamat-E-Islami last year to spread the network of the organisation in Assam through the Islamic militant outfits active in Assam. He was given guidance and instruction by one Mustafa Kamal of Rongpur area of Bangladesh.

During questioning by the Security agencies, Sahadat admitted that after coming to Assam, he got married and joined the MULTA. He was involved in the kidnapping of a businessman in Toofanganj in North-Bengal for extorting money. He, along with at least 10 of his associates, were active in strengthening the bases of the MULTA in Dhubri and neighbouring areas. Taking advantage of the porous Indo-Bangla border. Sahadat made a number of trips to Bangladesh in the past one year. According to security sources, the MULTA activist went to Bangladesh on several occasions through the international border in Golokganj area of Dhubri district. But the route frequently used by the militant was through the south 24 Paragana area of West Bengal and he admitted before the security agencies that he had crossed over to Bangladesh on several occasions through the Bongaon point in West Bengal to reach Beniapool in Bangladesh.

Meanwhile, according to an intelligence input, at least 20 activists of the Al-Qaeda entered Assam from Bangladesh last month. But sources admitted that the report could not be confirmed. However, sources revealed that some youths from Bangladesh entered Assam but it is still not known whether they belong to any militant outfit or not. There were also reports that a number of youths from the districts of Nagaon, Dhubri and Barpeta were taken to Bangladesh for training by Islamic militant groups recently. However, the exact number of youths taken is not yet known to the security agencies.
