Irilbung security post torched

IMPHAL, February 4: Unidentified armed persons burnt down the unoccupied security post, located at Irilbung in Imphal East district late last night. The main building and other furniture have been totally destroyed in the fire. The post was earlier occupied by CRPF and IRB personnel, sources said. Police said that the 11 IRB personnel who had manned the post were withdrawn some 5-6 months back for using in counter insurgency operations. CRPF personnel were staying at the post before they were replaced by the IRB personnel. Reports said armed persons made an attempt to burn down the post some days back. However, they were resisted by meira paibis, the sources said. On receipt of the information, a police team lead by Imphal West SP and commandos conducted frisking around the area till 9 last night. The arson was carried out after the police had left the area. Fire Services also did not rush to the site as no information was received. Police found the structure completely gutted when they visited the site this morning, police said. It may be recalled that unidentified armed persons have burnt down former security installations located at Andro Chingthak, Sawornbung, Lamlai, Sagolmang, Kangchup and Waikhong some time back.
