GUWAHATI, Oct 29 ? A crucial meeting of the Consultative Committee of the Ministry of Home Affairs will be held in New Delhi on November 5 to discuss important issues like the security scenario in the north-eastern region, situation in Jammu and Kashmir and the Naxal-affected States.
Talking to newsmen here today, Member of Parliament Sarbananda Sonowal, who is a member of the Committee, headed by the Union Home Minister, said that the meeting assumes significance for the North Eastern Region in view of the latest developments in the security scenario as the National Democratic Front of Boroland (NDFB) has expressed its willingness to come forward for talks with the Government of India and the United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) has also started showing positive response to the appeals for talks.
Sonowal said that taking the opportunity of the meeting at this crucial juncture, he would try to raise the issues of talks with the militant groups for political solution of the problem of insurgency in the meeting. He said that he would try to impress upon the Central Government to go to the root of the problem of insurgency for solving the problem. He expressed the view that the Centre must take steps for the development of the region for solution of the problem of insurgency.
He pointed out that as per clause VII of the Assam accord, the Centre should have taken positive steps for the economic development of Assam and the All Assam Students? Union (AASU) had offered a series of suggestions in this regard. But the suggestions of the AASU were never implemented, he added.
Sonowal said that as the nodal Ministry for implementation of the Assam Accord, the Union Home Ministry must take immediate steps for the implementation of the Accord. He pointed out that any discussion on the security scenario of the North East cannot be completed without taking a serious note on the problem of infiltration of foreign nationals into the State.
He said that the infiltration of foreigners posed a serious threat to the security of the region and the Central Government must take immediate steps for the solution of the problem for maintaining the integrity of the country.
