GMC draft electoral rolls: Over one lakh increase in voters since ?95

GUWAHATI, June 14 ? There is an increase of 1,22,825 voters in Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) since 1995 as per the draft electoral roll published in view of the ensuing GMC election. Announcing the publication of draft GMC electoral roll today, the Deputy Commissioner of Kamrup district, AK Absar Hazarika informed that there were total 4,54,904 voters in all the 60 GMC wards compared to 3,32,079 voters as per the 1995 poll rolls. The draft GMC voters? list for each GMC ward will be in display in GMC Commissioner?s Office, concerned police stations/outposts, Revenue Circle office, Kamrup DC office, Registration Officer?s office and State Election Commissioner?s office at Housefed complex here.

Claims and objections regarding the draft poll rolls will be entertained during June 15 to 22 and the same will be heard and disposed during June 23 to June 29 next. The date of publication of the final electoral roll has been fixed for July 9, 2002. The Deputy Commissioner, however, clarified that there would be no new entry in the draft electoral roll which has been prepared on the basis of the last Assembly electoral rolls of 51 Jalukbari LAC, 52 Dispur LAC, 53 Guwahati East LAC and 54 Guwahati West LAC.

Those voters whose names were in the last Assembly poll roll, will also be there in the GMC electoral rolls as per the directive of the Assam State Election Commission (ASEC). The ASEC vide notification No. 29/99/123 dated 19/4/2002 ordered for the preparation of electoral rolls in respect of 60 wards under GMC for election to the GMC on the basis of the Assembly poll rolls of Jalukbari, Dispur, Guwahati East and Guwahati West LACs published by the Election Commission of India taking January 1, 2002 as the qualifying date.

The ASEC entrusted the responsibility of preparation of the GMC electoral rolls to the Deputy Commissioner, Kamrup, who divided the 60 GMC wards into 10 zones under 10 Zonal Magistrates and appointed 60 gazetted officers as Registration Officers to prepare the rolls wardwise. For disposal of claims and objections regarding the draft GMC poll rolls, one centre has been selected in each of the sixty wards with one designated officer who shall receive the claims and objections in prescribed forms and submit to concerned Registration Officer for disposal. The Zonal Magistrate will supervise the work of the Registration Officer.
