France to sponsor solid waste management project in Imphal

IMPHAL, Jan 31 — In a significant development, the French Government has agreed to sponsor a solid waste management project at Imphal at the initiative of the State Governor, Ved Marwah, sources said. It may be mentioned here that the rehabilitation programme of the old Kangchup water treatment plant having a capacity of 14.53 MLD has been completely implemented in the State with the help of the French government. The water treatment plant which is supplying drinking water to over 5,00,000 imphalites since its implementation was formally inaugurated by the State Governor, Ved Marwah, on September 27 last year. The solid waste management project which is planned to transform the Imphal city into a modern town had two components. They are waste management improvement programme and compositing and landfilling. Sources said the compositing plant and landfilling will be located at Tamdeng Khunou in Imphal West. The Government also acquired 2.71 hectares of land for this purpose. The estimated cost of the project is Rs 41 crore of which the French Government will forward Rs 25 crore through the government of India under the Indo-French bilateral cooperation and the remaining Rs 16 crore would be borne by the State Government, the sources revealed.
