Imphal, Nov. 30: The BSF, which has been in the forefront of counter-insurgency operations in Manipur, today said it had ?re-established? civil administration in Churachandpur and Bishenpur districts, where its troops are currently deployed.
The BSF was deployed in the state in 2000 primarily to counter insurgency in two districts following the withdrawal of army troops due to the Kargil conflict.
Initially, there were only six battalions, but two additional battalions were later deployed.
BSF deputy inspector-general for Manipur and Nagaland P.K. Misra, in a statement on the eve of the force?s Raising Day, said prior to the BSF?s deployment, the situation in Churachandpur district was very bad, with militants in ?complete control? of the four sub-divisions of Henglep, Thanlon, Parbung and Singhat.
According to the BSF, civil offices and police stations in these four sub-divisions had ceased to function with militants controlling the administration in the area.
The BSF said insurgents had even ?patrolled? the area and collected illegal taxes. Misra said the BSF was able to create a rapport with the public.
