Bodo, non-Bodo groups meet BJP chief for BTC

NEW DELHI, April 30? Several Bodo and non-Bodo organisations under the banner of Coordination Committee for Bodoland Movement (CCBM) today called on the BJP national president, Jana Krishnamurthy urging him to prevail on the Central Government to expedite the creation of Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC). A delegation of the CCBM spearheaded by All Bodo Students Union (ABSU) is currently in the capital to press for solution of the Bodo problem.

A spokesman of the CCBM told this newspaper that the delegation comprising representatives of Bengali, Adivasi, Nepali, Muslim, Rajbongshi communities among others met the BJP national president to intervene in resolution of the Bodo problem. The delegation also conveyed to the BJP president all communities living in the Bodoland areas were united and felt secure under the proposed BTC.

The delegation was also accompanied by nine Bodo MLAs and two MPs including U G Brahma and S K Bwiswmutiary. The president and general secretary of ABSU Rabi Ram Narzary and L Daimary respectively were also present. The move on part of the Bodo leadership to project an united face before the Central Government was significant given the opposition to creation of BTC by a section of non-Bodo organisations. The delegation?s visit also comes at a time when the Ministry of Home Affairs has admitted having cautioned Assam Government about the palpable tension between the two communities, asking it to take measures to defuse it and take adequate steps to tackle the situation.

The delegation, meanwhile, is waiting for an appointment to meet the Prime Minister. It also plans to call on other senior Central leaders including Union Home Minister. Meanwhile U.G. Brahma the lone Bodo MP in Rajya Sabha in his maiden special mention speech today urged the Central Government to come to the aid of the State Government with adequate funds for permanent rehabilitation of the riot victims languishing in relief camps in Bodoland areas.
